Bismuth Oxychloride…what the heck is it and why do you and I need to know ?It is a common filler used in cosmetics and is a leading ingredient in mass marketed mineral makeup sold by the famous and high dollar mineral makeup companies you see on TV infomercials and home shopping channels
Considered a heavy metal and derived from the smelting process of lead and copper, it’s chemical properties are very similar to arsenic. Bismuth is found naturally in the earth, so companies using it as an ingredient can claim it as natural. Natural gas and sulphur are as well, but you don’t want to breathe it. So what is bismuth oxychloride and why it is used in cosmetics?
To get to the form that is safe for use in mineral makeup, and it’s safety is indeed questionable at best, the bismuth must go through several processes. After all this so-called purification, the finished product is a silky feeling , pearly like substance that gives mineral makeup its’ glow or skin enhancing qualities that mimic younger looking skin. It also helps the mineral makeup “stick” to your face better.
But what are the risks of using mineral makeup with bismuth oxychloride ? When I first used mineral makeup, I bought the leading brand we all know from TV and home shopping networks. It didn’t take long for me to start itching, especially when I got warm or went outside on a humid Mississippi day. I broke out in little bumps around my nose and mouth. I looked at the ingredients list and there it was …bismuth oxychloride. I had heard that this was an irritant in cosmetics and was horrified to see it listed as the #2 ingredient in a makeup I was lead to believe was “all natural “. It can cause serious skin blemishes and can cause rosacea to worsen. I had a mission. There had to be a more natural, bismuth free mineral makeup available. I researched ingredients from many companies and found that a great percentage of them contained bismuth. This was the signature of mineral makeup. The natural glow of youthful skin.
After much research and diligence I found a mineral makeup guru in CO, who makes her base minerals with NO Bismuth. She was heaven-sent. I have collaborated with her for my mineral makeup formulas since the beginning of Free Spirit Beauty’s birth. I still have the sheer coverage of the better known and more expensive brands, but without the bismuth oxychloride. Free Spirit Beauty foundations have a matte finish.
If you have irritations to other brands of mineral makeup, maybe bismuth is the culprit. And even if you can tolerate the ingredient, why would you want to put something on your face as toxic as bismuth oxycholoride
Our mineral makeup products are bismuth oxychloride and preservative free. We can claim to be a natural mineral makeup. Read your labels. If you can’t pronounce it, maybe you shouldn’t be putting it on your face.
